My Students
Go back in time to your first day of fourth grade. Freshly sharpened pencils, markers with clean tips, and (if you were REALLY lucky) a brand new blue calculator with red buttons. You can help my students get that same feeling you are remembering right now.
I teach a fabulous group of fourth graders at a charter school in Michigan.
The area in which we live is one that is largely dependent on the American auto companies. As you could imagine, it's not exactly "the best of times." Regardless, the students at our school have their eyes focused on their future. They know that education is critical for them and they are devoted to playing their role in getting an education.
My Project
I don't think I have to tell you what a huge difference a simple pencil can make in school. It's simple: do you have something to write with - or not? I think you can imagine what a relief it would be for each student to have their own calculator as well. The dry-erase markers, however, require more explaining. We were fortunate enough to have small white boards for each of the students donated to our classroom. They love using these white boards during class to more clearly - and colorfully - interact with the lesson.
These resources will get the students motivated about school from the moment they walk in the door.
They will give them the same feeling you were getting back when you were recalling your new #2 pencils.
