Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, shy, inquisitive 1st graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, and 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.
My students desire to be challenged academically, grow exponentially, and learn mindfully.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.
My Project
Having basic supplies available in my classroom allows my classroom and year to run smoothly. Copy paper is always a huge need in the classroom. Many of my students' parents do not have access to email and sending a typed note home is the often the most effective means of communication. Drawing paper and crayons make it easy for fast finishers to add details to their writing, and provide an age appropriate template for partner work. Other items such as Scotch tape, correctional tape, highlighters, and markers are needed to post projects and fix small errors, for students to track their learning on fluency charts, and to build healthy study habits.
This project will impact my students by providing them with the bare necessities needed to keep our classroom running smoothly.
These materials will ensure that my students are able to take notes and vocabulary materials home to their families, and also to continue the learning process through weekly spelling and homework assignments. These materials will help my students to learn to scan their reading for key words and high frequency words using a highlighter or crayon. With the aid of these materials my students will learn to be responsible scholars.
