This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of supplies or that the class set of novels that I provide them are old, torn and just in complete disrepair. The students even need to use the same basic paper folder everyday for the entire year.
Our classroom needs basic supplies to support our daily lessons and hands-on learning.
Being a low income school, we do not ask for supply fees. Most of the supplies we use in our room our bought by the teacher. As the year has gone on our stock has depleted and we need more supplies and better quality supplies
My Project
Every year I buy my classroom supplies with my own money. My classroom set of "The Lightning Thief" are 8 years old and are in desperate need of replacement. I can't tape or glue them anymore! We are only in November but my supplies are running low already. Most of our curriculum requires me to copy and print for the students. This requires me to use about 5 cases for paper a school year. We also use post-it notes daily for note taking in our novels. The students are able post them in their books and not write in their novels. Since I have to make copies of all of the students work they keep those copies in paper folders. After 10 weeks of school, bringing them home and back, those folders are ripped and ragged. Replacing them better quality plastic ones will ensure they last longer. Lastly, the students use page markers to mark our books when they find evidence to back up a claim, this saves them time and helps them make better arguments.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
