Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Miss, can I borrow a pencil?"
"Miss, do you have any paper?"
Without fail, these are the two most frequently asked questions in my classroom. It never ceases to amaze me how many students show up to my English classes without basic supplies.
At my high-needs school in Manhattan, 95 percent of students qualify for the free lunch program.
This means that many students are unable to obtain even the most basic of school supplies, such as a notebook, folder, and a pencil. My students are a bright, enthusiastic group of individuals who genuinely enjoy learning. It saddens me that they often go without their much needed school supplies.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting spiral bound notebooks, folders, pencils, sticky notes and index cards. Having these supplies in my classroom will enable me to focus more on instruction and the planned activities, instead of scrounging up supplies for the students. Students will be able to do their homework and participate in the day's lesson.
Without the basic tools used for studying, students are not able to grow as thinkers.
There is no reason why students should be without the most basic school supplies. But with a huge budget cut at my school, there is no money for these things. With your help, every student will have access to the materials that will give them the education they deserve.
