Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into our classroom every day buzzing with excitement. Elementary education is an exciting experience for most children, but for my students, all of whom come from a high-poverty neighborhood, it is a chance to escape from the hardships and negative environments that many of these young children are exposed to. My students are English Language Learners, and their excitement to learn not only a new language, but also math and literacy, makes teaching them a truly rewarding experience. I work hard to make sure they have lots of positive experiences with math and literacy, and also create a sense of community and belonging in our classroom.
Our classroom is a safe haven that gives these wonderful students the chance to become explorers, critical thinkers, mathematicians, scientists, authors, artists, and caring, responsible friends.
Their excitement for learning is something that I truly wish to nurture and develop into a lifelong passion for education.
I do not let the obstacles of minimal to no resources discourage me on this mission. It only motivates me to strive harder to provide them with the best and most comprehensive education possible.
My Project
My students are always eager to learn new academic skills and their excitement for learning is a true motivation to help them succeed. As I introduce them to new academic skills in language arts and math, it is important for my students to be given the opportunity to apply these skills in a variety of ways.
With engaging activities that involve art, unique writing tasks, or hands on learning with magnetic resources, my students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a manner that will make a deeper connection.
In order to make these unique learning opportunities possible it is imperative that we have basic school supplies such as crayons, pencils, and folders to store their amazing work with care. The primary style writing journals allow me to differentiate writing tasks for ESL and Bilingual students because it has space for them to illustrate and label words that they may not know how to write in addition to larger size lines which are more appropriate for younger elementary students. Furthermore, the magnetic chart stand provides my English Language Learners an opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills during group presentations in which they create and present posters or model mathematical reasoning with magnetic manipulatives. With your help my students will have the resources they need to have positive and meaningful learning opportunities in the classroom.
