Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I understand this now!" Nothing makes me happier than hearing my students say that statement. It is what drives me as a teacher. My students come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but the common thread with all of them is that they have an interest and a passion for science.
I am fortunate to have a variety of chemistry students, from those that are fulfilling a graduation requirement in Chemistry, my pre-IB Chemistry students preparing for their IB diploma program, and my AP Chemistry students who are passionate about science and want to experience more science classes.
For my chemistry and pre-IB chemistry students, this is their first exposure to chemistry, and I want to foster, encourage, and support an interest in the topic. My AP Chemistry students are students who have taken chemistry previously and have decided that it is a subject they want to continue to pursue and investigate further.
It is my goal to create a classroom that supports and fosters a love of science in my classroom through the utilization of technology, literary works, science equipment, and materials that embrace a supportive classroom community.
My Project
With a limited school budget and a very tight allotment of paper and supplies, it is difficult to make it through the year with the supplies that we need in our classroom. Unfortunately, paper, pencils, erasers, and whiteboard markers are utilized everyday, but I am running out of all of those and can not provide my students the work environment I want without them.
We are not a 1:1 school yet, so paper and pencil is still the way to make sure all students get the same educational materials provided to them.
I work very hard to make sure that I conserve paper as much as possible, fit as many things on a page and keep the pages of an assignment to the absolute minimum, but because we are not a 1:1 device school, paper and pencil is still a huge component of the education in a classroom, and all students need to have access to those materials. For group work, I have some white boards that students collaborate with and it gives everyone in their group a voice and a chance to share their knowledge, but I do not have enough whiteboard markers for each group, so doing whiteboard activities is very challenging.
These items would help provide a class environment where they can worry less about having all of the basics they need to come to school and participate.
