Help me give my students two sewing machines and sourdough bread baking supplies for our X-Factor classes. We also need physical education supplies that would allow for social distancing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My scholars live in El Cajon, California, and are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. We are in our pilot year of building and designing a student-centered learning model. Middle school is many things. It is a time of intense growth and intellectual development, and we want our scholars to think back to their experience at our school and remember how each learner was empowered to imagine, design and explore.
The mission and vision of our new middle school is to develop a global academy that focuses on each scholar's individual passions; our scholars are brilliant and they are on a life-long journey to becoming multilingual, multi-literate, and multicultural global citizens.
Most of our scholars have faced significant educational disruption as well as financial instability in their lives as a result of COVID-19 and school closures. Approximately 68% of our scholars come from low-income families, classifying our school as Title I.
My Project
Your gift will support us in creating maker spaces at our school site where scholars can make, collaborate, learn and share. The sewing machines will be housed in a space with woodworking and electronic supplies. We plan to support the students in dreaming, designing and creating a space where they can let their curiosity and imagination come to life. These materials will bake a difference in the students’ learning because maker space learning can empower students, helping them to shift from being passive consumers of information and products to active creators and innovators.
The hope is for scholars to have a room where trans-disciplinary learning, inquiry, risk-taking, thinking, crafting, tinkering, and wondering can blossom.
Some projects include: sewing masks, zero-waste reusable bread bags, baking sourdough bread from scratch, beginning with the starter. Because these will be student-centered lessons, most will be guided by their interests and passions.
In addition to learning how to sew and bake, students will apply mathematical and scientific concepts. Math shows up in many concepts of cooking and baking. Baking of bread, for example, involves temperature, moisture content and volume changes that are strongly linked. Sewing is applied geometry and involves measuring, fractions and calculating sizes.
Also, because our school expanded from a PreK-5 to PreK-8 this academic year, we have had a lot of additional expenses, not leaving much in the way for PE equipment. We are returning to a hybrid model (a combination of Distance Learning and face-to-face instruction) this week and the outdoor equipment will facilitate opportunities for safe and fun outdoor learning activities while practicing distancing.
