As we prepare to return to in-person instruction, our middle school team is eager to provide opportunities for our scholars to explore individual passions and projects. Students will take an X-Factor class where advisors/educators can expose students to their passions such as cooking, baking sourdough bread, sewing, and carpentry. These classes will expose students to important skills while also integrating teacher passions. Sewing is not just a craft and hobby; it is a life-long skill that will help our scholars build self-confidence. Learning a new skill and gradually mastering it can also greatly improve a person's self-reliance. Sewing supports in developing hand-eye coordination, mathematical competencies, clothes-mending skills, as well as planning and preparation. Sewing requires concentration and focus, problem-solving skills, and fine motor skills. It challenges left-brain thinking and is a great way to express one's creativity and individuality. Also, let's not forget that sewing is applied geometry. The mathematics and mathematical thinking in sewing include measuring fabric, calculating seam allowances, and grading patterns. These materials will allow our scholars to pursue individualized and student-centered projects. Some of the first projects will be to sew masks, individual pencil pouches, and other items that will support our in-person instruction- the possibilities are endless!
