My school is located in Staten Island, N.Y. We are one of only a few District 75 schools that caters to students with severe disabilities. The physical education needs of the students are widely varied depending on their disability. It is imperative to have a variety of equipment to meet the individual needs of each of the students.
The students in our program are all on the autism spectrum and require access to multi-sensory equipment in the gymnasium that will help them build the foundational skills needed for a life of physical fitness.
Having the right equipment is important because children are exposed to and are expected to attain some of the most important gross motor and manipulative skills during the first couple of years of elementary physical education.
My Project
Children on the autism spectrum need differentiated activities and multiple access points to learn and acquire physical skills. Lack of motivation to "traditional" activities can result in student with ASD to not be engaged in physical activity. This project is aimed at acquiring equipment to help create activities that are highly motivating and give students a better chance at enjoying to participate in physical activity.
Students on the autism spectrum often lack motivation to participate in traditional physical activities, so this project is aimed at providing them with the equipment to build essential foundational skills in an exciting way.
Floor scooters will help students strengthen core and large muscle groups while engaging in activity in a fun way. The bowling and baseball equipment will help them develop relative skills that can be used in team sports and transferred into recreational play within their community!
