Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first-grade students are excited to be learning together at a distance this year. They love sharing about their families, their hobbies, and their hopes and dreams. They are silly and playful and anxious to connect with each other in our zoom classes each day.
First graders are full of enthusiasm for learning, curious about the world around them, and eager to share their observations and stories from their lives.
We are able to share our ideas orally in our live classes and students also record their voices on the assignments that they submit each day on our digital learning platforms. But students' favorite activities are the ones where they can use their hands to create at home and to share their projects with each other online.
The majority of students in my class come from low-income backgrounds. Many of their parents are essential workers outside the home and their online learning is being supervised by grandparents, aunties and uncles, and older siblings. This makes having physical materials available to them at home even more important for their development and learning.
My Project
After a creative and productive year of learning at home, many of my first graders are getting ready to return to in-person learning at school. this spring. One of our first priorities when we get back in the classroom will be to spend "time on text": building up our reading stamina and spending more and more time every day reading independently.
In order to build their reading muscles, first graders need to spend time every day reading books that are at their "just right" level: not too hard and not too easy.
They need to read lots and lots of books at their level and develop strategies for figuring our new words and recognizing important vocabulary independently. They need to talk with classmates who are reading the same books to grow their ideas and deepen their comprehension.
Because of COVID safety precautions, students can no longer access our classroom library or check books out of our school library. These new books will allow me to create personalized book bags for each child that they can read individually at their desks at school or which can be sent home for students who are continuing distance learning. Exciting topics like dinosaurs and volcanoes will reignite their curiosity and increase their motivation to read more and more books.
