Just Right Readers are Just What We Need

My Students

My 18 diverse kinder kiddos are active learners. They like to move and explore. We are a Title I School in a low income and rural area. That doesn't stop my students though, they are very motivated to learn! They are silly and love to laugh, so I like to make learning fun for them. They enjoy learning through song, dance, and play. I have 9 girls and 9 boys in my class, each one curious about the world around them. They want to soak up all the knowledge that I give them!

My Project

As a kindergarten teacher, my greatest joy is teaching young children to read. I love to see their faces light up as everything begins to click and they start reading small books.

Giving children access to books they can read is vital to their success.

One strategy I use to increase their reading ability and their love of reading is to send home a "Bag of Books" with each child. I send home three books at a time and a student can return it for more books after they read the ones in their bag. This helps to provide access to on-level reading materials that a student might not have at their home. It's sort of like having a tiny little library (full of books a kindergartener can read) in our classroom.

This year my students are avid readers with a great interest in books. I'm requesting more leveled "just right" readers for them. I selected books based on their interests and reading skills.

This project will benefit them greatly in the area of phonics, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. It will also increase their love of learning and reading.
