My students need more books on their reading level so that they can independently read. Many of my students are having a difficult time finding "just right" books to read during read to self.
My 5th grade class has 28 students who come from a variety of unique backgrounds. Our school boundaries include a more affluent area, as well as a less affluent area. At our school, we have nicknamed them the have and have nots. While some students in my classroom have books to read at home, some do not. For some of my students, school is the only place they can get a good book to read and improve their literacy skills.
My students are amazing kids this year, but most are extremely behind in their literacy skills and need a wider variety of books than I currently have to fill their needs.
With such a huge learning gap, I am asking for more books at a variety of levels to help the students find "just right" books.
With this project, I hope to inspire my students and get them interested in reading, as well as improve their literacy skills.
My Project
My students need good books that are at their independent reading level that they can read during our daily read to self time.
This year, I have many students who have complained that most of my books on my bookshelf are either too difficult or too easy for them.
Many of the books I have are too easy being closer to a level M or N. Additionally, many of my books are also levels T-Z and they just aren't quite there yet. By getting a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction books a few levels lower than grade level, I can accommodate the vast majority of my classroom.
Having more books at a slightly lower level will benefit all of my students, even those who may be at a higher guided reading level. The more my students can read, the better they will become in all areas of literacy.
