This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first-grade students are excited to be returning to school to learn together this year. They love sharing about their families, their hobbies, and their hopes and dreams. They are silly and playful and anxious to connect with each other after our pandemic year.

First graders are full of enthusiasm for learning, curious about the world around them, and eager to share their observations and stories from their lives.

They love to explore favorite authors in reading, tell stories from their lives in writing, and learn new math and science concepts.

The majority of students in my class come from low-income backgrounds. School is a safe place for them to learn and grow together and to create a supportive community.

My Project

After a year of distance learning, my first grade students need so much practice handling and experiencing books! We sent many of our classroom books home last year and now we need to replenish the libraries of books that students can read independently at school and borrow to take home for reading homework. Several of my students did not receive any instruction last year in kindergarten, so it is an urgent need for them to have books at an emergent level so that they can start to read and feel successful.

Books are just right when beginning readers can recognize most of the words on a page and can read through the pages independently.

When children have not yet learned to see themselves as readers, they struggle to do this and ask for help or say, "I don't know how to read." When they experience the feeling of reading a "just right" book on their own successfully, they feel like readers! The more successful they feel, the more they want to read!

This project also includes a subscription to Scholastic Magazine which offers engaging and accessible content, and a selection of picture books written by Black authors where students will see their life experiences and joy reflected.
