My Students

My English Language Learners come from a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and academic backgrounds. While developing a proficiency in the English language, my students are simultaneously attending content area classes. They have large aspirations, and it is my goal to help start them out on the best path possible for their future.

As a public International Baccalaureate school, we strive to create globally minded inquirers.

My students love when they are able to explore new concepts and construct their own meaning through purposeful discourse, making connections, and exploring material they are passionate about.

My Project

Through guided reading, teachers are able to mentor a child or a small group through the reading of a selection, drawing them into an exploration of the context, the content, and the words. The goal of a successful guided reading group is to help students understand the meaning of a text.

In guided reading groups, students learn reading strategies such as looking for context clues, understanding syntax or word structure, and using inference skills, to help them read text that may be unfamiliar to them.

In the small group, students can also learn from and support each other. Students can become more fluent readers, learn a variety of reading strategies that help with more difficult texts, learn how to ask appropriate questions about the text, have open conversations with their peers about the text, think critically, and encourage students to use prior knowledge and experience and apply it to the text.
