As a teacher, I am supposed to be changing their lives, but they are changing my life. I work with some of the most amazing students EVER!
My students come from all walks of life and all different kinds of backgrounds.
My goal is to find ways to connect with them every day. And, what better way to do that, than with books that they can connect to.
I had a student who picked up the book that I am asking for in this project. I couldn't get him to put it down, even when I was teaching.. he was reading. He told me it was the best book he has ever read. After giving my class a brief description of how much he loved the book, of course, the waitlist to check it out is 35 kids deep. This is where I decided to give the gift of reading to my whole class.
In this project, I am asking for Ghost, and the following book In the series, Petunia. Ghost ends in a way that you just "have to" read the next book in the series.
Have you ever had a book that you can't book down? Have you ever said to yourself... Just one more page? My students need books that will engage them and give them back their love for reading.
The books that I have chosen will allow my students to immerse themselves in a story that they can relate to.
The characters in the story come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Just like my students! The characters in this book overcome challenges from parent separation to not fitting in with their peers. Just like my students!
I believe that this book will be the next "Fortnight" for my kids without the video game. I can't wait to spend time with my class reading this book and watching them make life-changing connections.
