Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have some of the best kids, both academic and behavior wise at our Middle School. So many of my students face struggles on a daily basis, be it living in poverty or less than desirable home lives. Despite these harrowing challenges, these kids persevere and work their hardest to attain their goals of getting the most out of their education. Ninety-five percent of my class is above average and some are even GT; however, there are still deficits and gaps in their learning. Most specifically are my beginning and intermediate ESL students. While these kids performed above average on their 5th grade Reading state test in Spanish, that was the last year they were able to take the test in their native language. It is imperative that they acquire as much English before the state test in spring. Additionally, statistics show that if an ESL student does not exit the ESL program by middle school, the chances of those students graduating high school is slim. Using online language programs, these students are improving their English language acquisition in order for them to have more success not only on the Reading state test but in all of their academics.
My Project
When teachers present engaging lessons and activities via online learning platforms, students receive individualized learning to meet them where they are. Using technology devices allows for this needed flexibility. The advantage of using reading and writing assistance tools on the devices makes learning more relevant and meaningful to students. Access to learning the material in the format students engage with best allows them agency in their own learning experience. By remaining engaged in the content students self-navigate a curated media literacy activity. Each student experiences an individual and independent journey into studying English Literature, Grammar, and English as a Second Language.
My largest class exceeds my Chromebook inventory by ONE!
Please help 100% of my great kids to experience the best education we can offer!
