This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Walk-in tutoring is available twice a week after school for my seventh and eighth grade math classes and motivation to stay after school after already having a 90-minute math class is hard! Middle schoolers are always growing and there is a four-hour gap between lunch and after-school tutoring. We want the students to want to learn, but it is difficult to learn when the stomach is growling. Snacks also provide a more relaxed, social environment to help break down the barriers/assumptions of "I can't do math" and open communication to answer "How is math class going for you?" Students also recruit their friends to come to math tutoring with them because there are snacks. I love seeing that positive peer pressure and I am looking forward to seeing it this upcoming school year. Helping provide for physical wants and needs leads to helping provide for social-emotional needs which then leads to providing for the academic needs. I love when this domino effect comes together!
