This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from across the globe and face enormous challenges. We are a high poverty school and my students come from many backgrounds. Many are English learners and speak Spanish, Korean, Bengali, Tagalog, Russian, and more as their first language.

My students are a bright, motivated, and incredibly diverse group of middle school students.

I am inspired by their hard work and dedication to learning. In the face of challenges, they are resilient.

As a teacher, I want to inspire my students to persevere as they navigate growing up in Los Angeles during a pandemic. This year, we are beginning with distance learning. Each day, I will meet with my advisory students for an hour to focus on their social and emotional health.

My Project

Just Mercy is the true story of Walter McMilian, a black man who was sentenced to die for the murder of white woman that he did not commit. This story highlights and example of the criminal justice system's failure to get justice for an innocent man until his lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, founder of a nonprofit, whose mission sought to defend "the poor, incarcerated, and wrongly condemned." My students are already aware of the stark injustices in our society. This book will help bring the conversation to our language arts classroom!

Help us facilitate conversations that will help students process this incredible true story!

I was inspired by this incredible opportunity to share this story with my students. This book that is adapted for middle school students will pair perfectly with our unit called Justice Served, a unit that focuses on people who have stood up to defend the rights of others and fought for justice. Our unit includes Mother Jones and her struggle against abuses in child labor, Cesar Chavez's struggle to represent farmworkers, Nelson Mandela's work toward granting all South Africans equal rights, as well as several others who have fought against injustice. This book is a perfect enrichment tool that helps demonstrate the power of people to work toward ending injustice and creating a more just society. Students will be inspired by the book Just Mercy.
