I have the honor of teaching a special education classroom with first through fifth grade students. All of my students have a cognitive disability. My school is in an urban community. We do not have much in the way of resources, and a lot of our "extra" money goes towards meeting the basic needs our our students.

Too often special education students are at the bottom of the supply totem pole. My job as a teacher is to take nothing and turn it into something. My students LOVE hands on projects and get frustrated when they are on the cusp of understanding a concept but do not have the right materials to push their understanding over the edge. Most of my students learn best by doing something, and sometimes, regular construction paper isn't heavy enough for their projects. I want them to experience as much as possible. However, it is impossible for me to continue to fund everything out of my own pocket.

By having a supply of tag board on hand, my students can use the materials to make projects that show their learning in a way that is comfortable for them. The markers are a huge motivator and they will love to draw pictures of stories in reading, or make a model of their learning in science. The possibilities are endless.

With your help, you will empower my students to take two fairly simple materials and create something exceptional. You will help them show their learning and create a sense of pride in their hearts. Our society often shuns special education students, and do not hold them to any expectations. I, however, know that they can do way more than people give them credit for, and I just need your help to give them the resources to prove everyone else wrong. I want my students to advocate for themselves, and the best way for them to be able to express themselves in any way possible. Your support in supplies will help this process.
