My students need books about African Americans just like them! I teach in a school with a high percentage of African American children and want them to love the books I read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Let me try to identify! I want my African American children to identify with the characters in the books I read to them in class. My children also need positive role models. The books I have chosen should inform and pique the interest of all of my students.
My class consists of mostly African American students.
The children are energetic, enthusiastic and loving. Our school is a wonderful school with a caring staff. We are a high poverty area school with approximately 90% of our children receiving free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I have requested books about successful African Americans, scientists, and inventors. I have also requested books with African American characters such as: " A Chair for My Mother", "Allie's Basketball Dream", and several books by Ezra Jack Keats. I believe these books will pique the students' interest and inspire them to be the best that they can be. With your help, I hope to provide a more culturally rich library for my students.
Many of my students come from disadvantaged homes.
They lack positive role models. Having these books in my classroom library will have such a great positive impact on my students. Seeing the successes of other African Americans in our past and present will hopefully inspire the children to work hard and do their best in school. Help me to provide the best education possible for my students. Thank you so much for support!
