Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 20 of the most vibrant, intelligent, and compassionate young students, who work hard everyday to overcome their struggles in school. I watch as they strive to achieve their academic goals, learn to be kind and caring friends, and contribute to the school community. They may be labeled as "disabled", but they are anything but!

Despite their academic, physical, and, at times, emotional struggles, my students work extremely hard to be their very best selves.

They turn their learning and life challenges into a "strength" rather than a "disability". They are true superheroes to me.

My Project

A literacy-rich classroom should always have a well-stocked library of high quality books, both fiction and non-fiction, that reflect the cultural diversity of the students, staff, and community-at-large. As a teacher, I make every effort to build this type of library in my classroom.

As a special education teacher, however, I have to be extra diligent in ensuring that the different learning and physical abilities, as well as the social and emotional challenges, of my students are, also, reflected in my library.

With the books that I have included in this project, I plan on achieving this goal. I intend on placing these books in my class library, so that the students can always have access to them. It would be amazing to see my students just pick out a book and be able to say, "hey, this character is just like me". But it's equally important that the students see that these books are placed with all the other books in the library, which are full of diversity and uniqueness, and not separated from them. I would, also, like to use these books as, both everyday read alouds, and as purposeful read alouds that address inclusion and acceptance, as well as the power of perseverance and positive thinking.

With your support, I can add a wide array of books to my library that include people and characters with different abilities, strengths, and challenges. An inclusive library is a small, but impactful step, in creating an inclusive classroom, where all students are valued for their uniqueness.
