Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we believe in the power of young people and empower young minds to believe in themselves. My students are a large group of 5th graders who come to school every day wanting to work hard, learn, and have fun. We are all at different levels academically in this classroom but one thing that we all have in common is a love of good stories. For all of my students, this is their first year on a new campus where they are eager to grow in community with one another. These young minds are never afraid to fail and their courage inspires me every day.
In this class, every student is empowered to claim their voice and experiences.
Last year, our campus had the largest gains on state testing results compared to every school in the city. We know that it is not about passing or failing, but growing and working hard to do your best - that is what our students show us everyday in both spirit and data.
My Project
These books will make all of the difference in my classroom! Reading is something that every young child needs to be able to do as often as possible. With a large number of English Language Learners in my classroom, I strive to put as many words as possible in front of my students. For this classroom, the opportunity to have a class library will increase literacy rates in students who demonstrate the highest need. Access to books in our classroom will further grow my students' interest and abilities when it comes to reading and writing.
I strive to provide my diverse group of students with diverse materials that will further grow their minds, add perspective to their experiences, and further explore their unique interests.
This collection of books does just that. Growing our library will make all of the difference for our academic year and the academic years to come by providing students with as many opportunities as possible to read. My students treat books with love and care because they understand that this is a chance for them to be leaders and take care of materials so that they can be shared with future students/classes.
