I'm a third grade teacher in the Englewood community of Chicago. The community consist of families of low to modest income. My class consist of thirty-two students of various reading interest levels. I find that my girls are probably more mature than the boys and come to school with lots of personal issues.
Many times I find that I must have motivational pep talks to keep my girls focused and on task. I often bring in magazine articles to share with my girls hoping that it may inspire them to relate their interests to academic projects.
In order to motivate just my girls to want to increase their reading and writing skills, I've decided to create a "Just Us Girls" book club. My purpose for this project is to provide literature of interest for girls and to inspire them to write about it. My plan is to introduce "Dance Kayla" by Darwin McBeth Walton and discuss the literary style of the author. Along with the book, I'd like to provide a girl appealing writing journal to be used for their response journal.
My dad once told me that you can get more bees with honey than with vinegar. So, my proposal for literature and journals just for my girls is definitely not a selfish act but one that will hopefully lure my girls uniting them into a group of newly motivated honeybees who will love reading and writing together.
