My Students
Reading is a struggle for my students but many have told me that reading is their favorite thing to do. Many also voice their frustrations with reading because they do not have the basic skills necessary to read at grade level, which is getting harder as the enter middle school.
When they step into my classroom, I try to instill that love of reading while giving them those necessary skills needed to succeed.
My classroom has become a safe community where learners are free to ask questions and encouraged to make mistakes. When we correct a mistake, we know we have really learned something! We have so many great discussions about new vocabulary and connections we make to the text we read.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many students speak English as a second language. I also serve many students who are on IEP's as well as students who don't qualify for special education services but are in need of extra assistance. We work together in small groups, practice reading independently, and work on specialized software that meets each students unique needs in order to fill their learning gaps and move them towards proficiency.
My Project
My class is a reading intervention class. We split our time into 3 parts: small group for direct instruction, individualized software for guided practice, and independent reading to apply our skills. We can't make progress without all 3 parts.
Headphones and mice play a critical part in my students' day to day learning.
Their software is geared towards the gaps they have in basic phonemic awareness. When they work on their software, they use the headphones to correctly hear how letters, blends and words sound. They also use the microphone to practice saying those sounds and to practice reading text fluently. A real mouse, instead of a mouse pad, makes it easier for students to click on the correct word or letter.
We would really love a class set of mice so that everyone can use them at the same time instead of sharing them or using the mouse pad. This will make class run much more smoothly and everyone will have the advantage of easier clicking.
