As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
Being organized helps me keep calm and maintain a positive attitude! It really does. Less time cleaning up papers and files and reassembling filing cabinets means more time to devote to students. That’s what it’s all about!
My students will make use of the second drawer for student portfolios.
Students will be able to pick and choose from their work to decide what they are particularly proud of to place in their own portfolio. These will be shared with parents during our open house and during parent/teacher conferences. This will help to have students more invested in their learning and to take pride in their work. Work samples that span across the year will allow others to see the growth in each student. Every year I assemble student books for my students at the year's end that include lots of photographs and student writing. I can foresee us adding in pieces from the student portfolios as well! This would be a great addition, using work the student has selected as something they are most proud of.
Sounds like a win/win to me!
