My Students

Are the local newspapers just too confusing for your students to read? Is there a high level magazine that brings current events to students in an academically rigorous way that the students can understand? Scholastic News has the magazine subscription that can do the job.

I teach fifth grade students in a New York City public school and they are bright and eager learners.

We are in the borough of Queens which is one of the most diverse in the nation. The students we serve speak many languages and represent diversity in its finest form. Our international school community is a tapestry of cultures and global perspectives that enrich us all. The families of our students look to us to bring the finest materials to their children to support academic success. Now that the landscape of education is changing and we are looking towards an increasingly more rigorous curriculum, it is important to find interesting relevant resources that resonate with student motivation to learn. Informational text is the new emphasis and Scholastic News offers some of the best.

My Project

Scholastic News is a news magazine for middle school students that offers informative, interesting and entertaining news for students to read. The subscription I am requesting will support continuity of instruction throughout the year with these magazines. The magazine also has an online interactive component with assessments that promote learning in an engaging way. It is essential to cultivate student interest in global events that is ongoing The subscription will achieve this and encourage the students to seek out more information through other online news sources. Discussions, understanding journalistic perspectives, and the ability to critically evaluate the stories they read are all part of what Scholastic News can bring to my classroom. This is a 21st century in print and digital vehicle for learning that can enhance the conversation.

Scholastic News is a high level news magazine that we hope to read throughout the year with the subscription I am requesting.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, but it is costly. Between the print and online resources and interactivity Scholastic offers, it is well worth the cost, but just beyond our financial grasp. We need help in funding this proposal so that all my students can have a copy of the magazine throughout the year. I am convinced this is an excellent investment in our future.
