Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach 2nd grade gifted students. We are located in a small town in Mississippi where over 74% of our students live in poverty. Free breakfast is provided for every student at our school.

In my gifted program, I teach skills that prepare my students for careers in the 21st century.

Included in these skills are many goals related to critical thinking, technology, logic skills, analytical skills, and problem solving.

My students are incredibly smart and love opportunities to learn new things. They enjoy experiments and discovery learning. We have completed several STEM activities where the students use their critical thinking skills to solve specific problems. It is exciting to see them so actively involved in their learning and observe their tenacity in each challenge.

My Project

Many children collect rocks and minerals because they are pretty or unique. I want my students to know the characteristics of rocks, to be able to classify them, and to understand the rock cycle. My students are fascinated with science and excel when I provide tangible lessons in my classroom.

I want to give my students a real-world geologist's experience with rocks and minerals in my gifted classroom.

The materials I am requesting will allow my students to observe rocks from all over the world and perform tests and experiments on them that scientists conduct in their profession.

My students will tests rocks and minerals for hardness, luster, texture, and absorption. They will also weigh their rocks, perform an acid test, and determine whether they have magnetic or fluorescent qualities.
