My students need an "Amazing Bugs" set to observe live ants, beetles, butterflies, lady bugs, and praying mantis in the classroom.
My 26 second graders are full of questions. The saying "actions speak louder than words" applies to all young children and definitely fits this group of students. They love using all their senses to acquire knowledge.
My students and I are fortunate to work, learn and grow in a school that promotes the Inquiry Research Model.
Our project focus is studying insects in order to become junior entomologists in our suburban school community. Even though we have one of the largest city parks in the nation in our school district, being able to have an Amazing Bug Variety Set in the classroom would allow students to develop their observation skills on a daily basis and not just during a one-time field trip to the park. This set would provide us with ants, beetles, butterflies, ladybugs and praying mantis.
My students will use their writing skills to submit an opinion letter that indicates which insect has caught their eye. Like interest groups will be formed. Each group will formulate initial questions they have about their insect. Both our media and computer specialists will assist the students in securing proper leveled nonfiction reading material about their insect. In the classroom, the children will observe their insect and learn how to record observations in "field notes." Each group will extend their learning through sharing and evaluating their recordings and readings to answer original questions and generate new ones. Additionally, with the live set of insects in the classroom, daily oral sharing will occur from group to group, analyzing likenesses and differences among the insects. Each student will use their new findings and utilize their knowledge of nonfiction text features to create an All About book as well as a diorama of their insect in its natural habitat.
We will celebrate our project with a Meet the Entomologist Gallery Night.
Parents and community members will be invited to view the students' books and dioramas. Guests will also be able to write comments in the books. Best of all, they will talk to the junior entomologists and view our live insects!
