Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Knowledge is power, but enthusiasm pulls the switch." (Ivern Ball) Labs get students enthusiastic about science. Labs spark curiosity and get kids motivated to learn the concepts behind the labs.
My students are a diverse group of 8th graders.
Some are children of military who have been to a number of different schools in different countries and some are children whose family has lived in this city for generations. Our population includes students from Hispanic, African American, white, Samoan, and Filipino communities. We are a Title One school where resources are tight.
My Project
What is middle school science? It should be hands on. Students should learn by doing. The kits I am requesting have all the materials necessary to do experiments with forces and motion. The students will be able to examine the friction resistance of a variety of surfaces as well as other investigations. These resources will give the students problems to solve and will require my students to apply their knowledge. Many students learn by doing and these lab kits have the materials needed to show what forces and motion is all about.
I do not have any lab materials for physics and I have no money in my classroom budget to buy them.
This donation will mean that my students will do science instead of just reading about it. Middle school is the time where many students decide if science is interesting or not. Having fun and meaningful experiments will motivate students to consider science as a possible career. Our community has many science related jobs and I want my under-represented students to get them!
