My Students

I am the librarian at an inner city, high needs school, grade K-9 Expeditionary Learning School. Although our students are high needs (80% poverty rate), our state reading scores continue to improve every year and last year we had the highest reading scores in our district.

Our students love to read.

If they see a book in the library that catches their interest, they will immediately pick it up and check it out. One of the types of books they love are books in a series, such as the Junie B. Jones series. Junie B. is a 1st/2nd grade student who is funny, outrageous, and bigger than life. These books are written for early readers and are usually one of the first "chapter books" that my students will pick up. Right now, I have a couple of books in this series, but I don't have a complete series. I am forever turning away students because I simply don't have enough books to go around. Junie B. is forever getting into trouble and makes for highly entertaining reading. This is definitely a book my students can relate to!

My Project

Once a child gets "hooked" on a series, I know that they are beginning on their path to independent reading. I would love to be able to offer enough books to keep them reading. Their excitement is contagious and the students themselves will sell the series to other students, making my job easy. The more our children read, the better their reading scores become. As adults, we know that reading opens all sorts of doors, and is necessary to achieve success. To be able to offer books that the students want to read is priceless.

If I had enough books in a Junie B.

series to offer my students, I can almost guarantee that these children will read with enthusiasm. The more books I have to offer, the better educated our children become. If you can help supplement our current collection, it would make it possible for me to offer a wide variety of books that will interest the students and keep them reading! Thank you for your consideration.
