Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are head-over-heels for Junie B. Jones! The "world's funniest kindergartener," as touted on the back cover, is a character that my first graders can relate to wholeheartedly.
I teach the most wonderful group of 20 first graders at a bilingual charter school.
They absolutely love to read, and this love is only strengthened by our daily read alouds of Junie B. Jones stories. They laugh out loud at her crazy antics, they predict what might happen next, and they make suggestions about how Junie could be more respectful and responsible. I told students that when they reach an end-of-first-grade reading level, they will be ready to read Junie chapter books all on their own - and they were up for the challenge! They read constantly, always remarking that the closer they get to their reading goal, they closer they get to Junie.
My Project
Since I put my first graders up to the "Junie Challenge," their reading levels have been improving dramatically! They are so excited about being able to read Junie on their own that many have almost reached their end of the year goal - and we're only half way through! The collection of Junie B. books I am requesting will allow students the flexibility of choosing the next story they want to read. Not only that, if we had 30 early chapter Junie books in our classroom, we would have enough for every student to read their own book!
Fostering an early love of reading is so important today.
With all of the other options out there for kids, like TV and video games, reading is starting to look like a boring and less-appealing alternative. With a character like Junie B. Jones to inspire laughter and provoke conversation, my first graders now absolutely love to read. They think reading is fun and exciting, and they can't wait to read more. With your help, and the help of Junie, my students will have a passion for reading!
