Jungle Painting Project--Acrylic on Canvas

Help me give my students the paints we need for the painting unit this semester.

My Students

The most common traits among the students in my Visual Art classes this year are enthusiasm, creativity, individuality and perseverance. My students range from 11 to 15 years old. They come from diverse socio-economic, religious, cultural and educational backgrounds.

When surveyed at the beginning of the class, this group reported speaking 22 different languages in their homes.

The most commonly reported first languages, besides English, were Vietnamese, Spanish, Somali, Oromo, Amharic, and Cantonese.

No matter how old they are, how much money their family has, or what language they speak at home, they all really enjoy engaging, hands-on art projects. My students and I are asking for your help to supply some materials needed for those projects this semester.

My Project

While preparing for this project, students will practice the color mixing skills needed to become an accomplished painter. They will learn about the color wheel and the names of several color schemes commonly used by painters and designers.

As they create their jungle paintings, students will mix all their own colors using only red, yellow, blue, black and white paint.

They will apply several layers and a variety of textures to their work. They will use contrast, and movement to lead the viewer’s eye the focal area of their composition.

This unit will take about 3 weeks of class time to complete. Of course, this means we will be using a lot of paint. I use acrylic paint because it gives a more realistic painter experience than tempera, and the paintings will last much longer without cracking and falling apart.

Students are already looking forward to the painting project. I hope your support will help me fund that experience for them this semester.
