My students face many challenges each day-before even arriving at school. As a teacher in a low-income Title I school, I realize that my students may not have the background knowledge that many other students have. It is my job to build that background knowledge and equip them with the skills they will need to experience successes. Their circumstances do not and should not define their ability to succeed. I want to create an exciting learning atmosphere to build their background knowledge, help them learn in more innovative ways, and develop the cooperative skills needed for success in today's world.
Oftentimes, a change in scenery or learning atmosphere builds the excitement needed for students to imagine, explore, and experiment at greater heights.
By creating such a place within our school, students will, by nature, be more eager to take risks and excel.
My Project
To create a unique learning environment, we will transform an empty area into a jungle whereby students will be transported into a habitat equipped with animals, a learning carpet, a waterfall, and other fun learning areas. Having students go to a "special place" creates an excitement for learning.
An oval jungle carpet will be the gathering area for a safari into learning with animal counters available for math activities across the grade levels.
"Safari guides" (teachers) will create innovative lessons using supplies found in the "jungle" to extend learning experiences. Flexible seating arrangements will help meet the learning needs of all learners.
Many of our students do not venture far from home or have not been read to throughout their early years and therefore, do not come to school with the background experiences they need to better understand topics in many subjects. Our "safari of learning" room will give students a chance to escape from the regular classroom and learn in a different environment. Oftentimes, just a change in scenery creates a new found excitement in a subject. Our safari room will create an excitement for learning for both our "safari guides" and students leading to greater successes.
