Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school. Our school is centrally located in the middle of our town and is the oldest elementary school in our district. Past and current families have built lasting relationships with our school that have allowed them to capitalize and take advantage of provided resources and support on a regular basis. We pride ourselves on being a vital component of the community. Our school is more than a school!

It takes a village to raise a child.

This is the motto at our school. Our mission is to inspire leaders by empowering scholars. We welcome and greatly appreciate any assistance that allows us to meet all the needs of our students and their families.

My Project

As the school social worker, a focus has been our students' social emotional learning. I have curated a room lovingly known as the Zen Den. This is a special place. It is well used by both teachers/ students. Zen Den features are relaxation items: inspirational books, magazines, and posters. It is divided into specific areas: sand play, sensory toys, arts & craft, and a yoga. Significant activity happens in this room. Imagine a room of socially distanced students starting their day with a healthy breakfast and yoga. Imagine a space for students/whole classes to relax and renew. Imagine a place where students can escape reality and find Zen! A place where students can simply refocus, breathe, and relax. The space is designed for positive impacts on students' social/emotional well-being.

As of late, the room is used by our school's two football teams and our Yoga Club.

Team members meet before school for recap, strategy time, team building, and exercise activities. Two mornings a week, our Yoga Club has sessions in this space. The goal is to foster healthy lifestyle habits with these two groups of students. We want to teach them strategies for dealing with anxiety and stressors in their day. We want to combat the struggles of daily life with awareness of the value of being present and in the moment.

The items will bolster the before school exercise routines for the football players and the Yoga Club members. The weighted balls and resistance bands will help the players center and build their cores. The balancing boards will help with coordination and balance. The yoga mats and balls will allow more students to participate in twice weekly club sessions.
