My Project

Students in my low-income area need supplies to set them up for success in the coming school year. Having these items (which include book boxes, primary composition notebooks, folders, name plates, pencil pouches, desk-top pencil holders, fidget items, and other supplies) helps even the playing field for my students. Prior to the start of school, purchasing these items frequently causes a financial strain for our families and consequently, many students are often unable to have these supplies to start their school year.

These supplies will help my students feel welcome and valued, as well as giving them the opportunity to express and celebrate themselves.

On the first day of school, students will use the art supplies (including the multicultural paper faces) to create self-portraits. We value the importance of our names. Seeing their names, self-portraits, and photos displayed in the classroom gives them a feeling of pride and a sense of ownership within their learning space. Students also use their instant photos in a space on the whiteboard as a social emotional learning tool. Students can show their present emotional state, by placing them within the designated emotional zones.
