Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach three sections of sixth grade literacy in a very under resourced school in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout the year, I have struggled to find enough copies of quality independent reading books to support my 70 readers and writers. I am desperate to find books that both interest my students but also are appropriate for their various reading levels. This is difficult, but it is particularly difficult during the middle school years. The students refuse to read "baby" books, yet certain students need to choose books on a lower level. I have a small library of about 300 books for my students to choose from. My students love to read, however, they are often forced to settle for books that don't interest them due to the limited number of high-interest, low level books in my library. I want desperately to keep my kids reading, but I simply do not have enough books to support the number of students in my classes. I want nothing more than to supply my students with the books they want to read. I understand the importance of sustained interest. The books that I am requesting will be invaluable tools that will truly benefit my students. Please help me to help my students to become better readers.
