This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an amazing and diverse group of kids who love coming to school.

My students are from many different backgrounds and come from about 25 different countries.

PE class is a great opportunity for them to learn and work together - team and individual sports and activities are universal.

My Project

Every year in Physical Education class, we have a big unit on Jump Rope that the students love. Especially this year, it will be an important part of our curriculum as it is the perfect PE activity to teach during COVID since we have to limit equipment sharing in order to stay safe.

Many of my students do not have jump ropes at home at this will allow them to practice and get better at the jumps we practice in class.

All students in grades K-4 learn how to jump rope, and students in grades 2-4 have the opportunity to earn a spot in our Jump Rope Club.

At the beginning of the unit, each grade is given several different jumps to learn. Each jump has different levels (based of the number of jumps) which are gold, silver, and bronze. After practicing, students can perform the jump for the teacher and try to get to their desired level. If a student passes all jumps at a level, they earn a spot in the Jump Rope Club and receive an award (certificate).

In past years, I have had several students come close to passing their jumps and joining the club, and they asked to borrow a jump rope so they could practice at home and get better. Most students who practiced at home were then able to earn their spot in the Jump Rope Club the next time they came back to PE. If I could get jump ropes for all students at my school, they would be able to practice at home and be able to use their jump ropes for fun and exercise all year long.
