My students walk through the door every morning with a positive attitude, love for learning, and eagerness to begin a new day! I want them to know that they are capable of great things and that they can be anything they want to be. They are mathematicians, readers, authors, scientists, historians, and explorers. But in a noisy world, I want them to know that most of all, they are heard.
I work in a large school where the backgrounds, abilities, and needs of my students are extremely diverse.
Some of my students are living in poverty, while others are still learning English. Some are reading many levels above grade level, while others have behavior struggles. However, one thing rings true for all of my 22 students, they love learning and they want to be the very best version of themselves. My students set personal and academic goals for themselves and they work extremely hard every year to achieve their goals.
My Project
At our school, we are lucky to have plenty of opportunities to incorporate movement into our day. A lot of research proves that the more students move during the day, the more material they retain in the classroom. As such, we enjoy recess a couple times a day.
Unfortunately, we do not have a lot of playground equipment such as footballs, jump ropes, and kickballs to keep us busy and to promote teamwork.
Often, students are sitting around the playground without anything to do or they are tired of doing the monkey bars for the hundredth time. Sometimes, more peer conflict arises out of pure boredom and not having anything to occupy time. The school provides some equipment, but it is spread thinly among the grades and many students and is often damaged or lost. It would be so beneficial to have equipment that was just designated for our class. If we had a bucket filled with activity and sport balls and some jump ropes, these students will be able to partake in a sport or partner activity. These games promote teamwork, communication, and movement. All are vital to a student's education.
