I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who works with immigrant and refugee students in an urban middle school. Although our district is supporting a one-to-one Chrombook initiative for students, there are 2 to 5 new students arriving most weeks. There can be a challenging delay before new students are assigned a Chrombook. In addition, when Chromebooks need repairs, students may have to wait for quite a while without a replacement loaner to complete schoolwork.
I am requesting two Chromebooks to house in my classroom for students who do not yet have an assigned Chromebook.
This will allow everyone to jump right in and begin learning. Often, immigrant and refugee students are moving from areas of war or political instability, and they may have limited experience with technology. Having two laptops in my classroom will allow them to begin building critical technology skills as well as language, math, and literacy skills.
In addition, I am requesting a heavy duty stapler. I frequently write small books for my new readers which include content and vocabulary we have been learning in class. A regular stapler just can't handle more than ten pages together. The markers will be used to create colorful anchor charts which my students use as a resource.
