Our students are Pre-K/EC and their ages range from 3-5 years. Our 4 classes are blended with children with different types of disabilities (Autism, developmental delays, fine and gross motor delays, speech delays, and other disorders). All of the students have some type of language and communication deficits.
I teach at a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Most of the parents are single parents which leaves little money to help with materials needed in the classroom.
My Project
The different materials I requested such as laminated sheets, cardstock paper, book rings, and velcro dots will be used to create adapted books for our new literacy curriculum. These adapted books will be used to accommodate our Pre-K students with mild to severe disabilities when learning the new Pre-K literacy curriculum our district adopted. Our students will benefit from the much needed emergent literacy skills that the new literacy curriculum will provide them. However, the special education teachers at our school would like to create a more hands-on approach for our students.
These interactive "adapted" books will provide another way to engage our students with books in a hands-on way.
Our goal with this project is to provide a way to ensure that each of our students participate as fully as possible during our daily literacy lessons and activities.
