Do you remember what it was like to learn to read? Maybe someone helped you at home and you went to school already knowing how to read. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and many of the parents do not speak English. For these students it is hard to learn to read.
My students attend a Title I school.
100% of the students receive free lunch. My students also receive free breakfast in the classroom. Some of the children at my school live in motels or shelters. Many of the students are Hispanic and are learning English. All the students work very hard in class and care about improving their reading. They are great kids and so deserving of technology that will help them learn to read and learn English.
My Project
The LeapFrog will enable these students to increase their reading proficiency. They will be able to hear the correct pronunciation of words and increase vocabulary as they look at the pictures in the books and follow along with the story. The students can use the pointer to read at their own pace. It will be easy for them to point to words that they are unsure of and hear those words again. Increasing vocabulary is essential for my students to become proficient readers. My students are just beginning to learn English. I need to provide them with every tool possible for them to succeed. With the LeapFrog Tag Reading system, the students can read on their own or with a friend. They will be reading engaging and colorful books that will interest them. My students are highly motivated. They will be very interested in this new technology and will not even realize they are actually teaching themselves.
First grade is such of an important year.
Students enter the class saying, "I can't read." I tell them, "You will read very soon." But, for those students who are learning to speak English, learning to read is very hard. The LeapFrog Tag Reading System will help these students so much. Please support this project!
