Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These outdoor lawn games and engaging STEM activities will bring a smile to every one of my sixth graders as they enjoy learning outside on Wednesdays on warm and sunny Spring days. My students will develop social skills such as collaborating and problem solving by participating in potato sack races, egg and spoon races, and 3-legged races. They will look forward to special days such as a water balloon celebration where students compete to see who can toss a water balloon the highest or farthest without it breaking. My students will marvel at the chemical reaction of Mentos candies with diet soda with the geyser tube experiment. They will develop patience as they wait for colorful crystals to grow. They will develop fine motor skills and an understanding of math concepts such as radius, diameter, and circumference when creating string art using the wood panels along with a hammer, nails, and string. They will express their creativity by drawing and writing inspirational messages around the track to motivate students who are running the mile.

Students who are given opportunities to learn outside with hands-on STEAM activities and movement challenges will be more engaged in school and develop a lifelong love for science, exploration, and physical fitness.

My students will look forward to going outside on Wednesdays for special activities and exercise, where they will get healthy sunshine, vitamin D, and a chance to showcase talents that are often overlooked when doing seatwork in the classroom. Thank you for supporting out of the box learning activities that make school fun and exciting. These STEAM activities will be especially healing for this group of students who attended school virtually for a year and a half and are in need of connection with peers and healing through the arts, sciences, and outdoor play.
