Our Title I elementary school is in a large metropolitan area. I teach K-6th graders 21st century media skills and to love to read. Our 560 students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including several Native American tribes. Many are immigrants from all over the world. Eighteen different languages are spoken in their homes. Over 80% of our students participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program and so are in financially challenged situations. Our library is critical for them.
We want to reach out to our at-risk older boys.
I've established a year long reading program for the entire school, but it doesn't entice this group of boys. With great anticipation I've watched them rummage through the sports and science sections of the library only to see them walk away empty handed because the books are too old to be pertinent for today. It is such a joy to watch their faces light up when they know we care enough to give them something they have specific interest in!
My Project
Our library's sports and science collections desperately need updating. Many of our older boys are not reading. We know they like these genres because that is where they spend their time looking, but often our old books hold no allure.
Through reading our students can gain a vision of something to hope and strive for in their futures, and perhaps even give them a moment of respite from their present cares and worry.
Giving them access to excellent S.T.E.M. books will help them see and understand their infinite possibilities. Providing them with quality books in subjects that interest them will not only tempt them to read, but will help them feel that their opinions matter.
