Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. A full 98% of students qualify for free lunch, and a lot live below the poverty line. Many have single parents who work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance groups has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.

For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.

But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.

Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.

My Project

We are in need of various winter and holiday themed music for our first concert of the school year. Our school purchasing office struggles with orders during the summer and fall months. We often do not have music in time for our very first concert. This past school year, our music arrived just two weeks before our December concert, and we barely had time to prepare. That meant we did not put on a performance of the high caliber that we would typically be capable of.

Ordering our music before the current school year ends would ensure that we would have ample time to prepare for our winter concert.

Our winter concerts feature a variety of tunes, and we emphasize performing at least one song that acknowledges each December holiday. My students come from a variety of cultures and have a multitude of traditions during the holiday season. Each year, I try to make sure we perform at least one Chanukah, Kwanza and Christmas tune as well as a number of more secular, winter type tunes so that no one feels left out or ostracized. We also use the Winter Concert as an educational opportunity so students can learn about traditions other than their own and engage in meaningful discussion with their peers. It is important that we have a wide variety of tunes at our fingertips so that we can put on a quality concert.

I teach a very unique group of high school students which includes first time players and beginners. This winter concert is the first performance opportunity for many of them. We need music at a variety of difficulty levels so that everyone can find success in their performance of this concert. This is only made possible by the generous donations of people like you!
