This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While learning about the building of the United States of America, it is important for students to have opportunities to not just learn from their class textbook, but also experience foundational aspects of American History through great literature written for young students.

I've selected the historical novels, True Confessions of Charolette Doyle and Chains, for my fifth grade class to help students explore the themes of human rights and social justice, examining ideals vs realities, and allowing students to recognize diverse experiences and perspectives in American history, including enslaved people and women.

My goal is that these stories, among others shared in class, will inform and thoughtfully engage students in how the legacies of the American Revolution and slavery continue to influence modern-day issues such as racial inequality, civil rights, and debates over historical memory and commemoration.

My students are naturally curious about history and contemporary issues. The never cease to amaze me. They rise to the challenge of reading a variety of genres when given the opportunity. By helping us to grow our novel study to include these books, students will be provided with an essential context for understanding American history, grappling with complex social issues, and fostering informed citizenship.
