This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of the state I work in could be considered rural communities. I endeavor to teach them about our world and the wonders that can be found in science. Being scientifically literate is a passion of mine—I am aware that most of my students may not be scientists in the future, but I want them to be able to make sound decisions as an adult. They need to be exposed to as much as possible to be successful in an ever growing world.

My students come from various backgrounds; our school is around 70% free and reduced lunch with a minority-majority.

Being a teacher that is constantly looking to improve and learn is a priority for me. Often, before middle school, they do not have science lessons due to the focus on literacy and math skills. Seeing the looks on their faces when they get to look at cells under a microscope is why I became a teacher!

My Project

Multiple studies have shown that having a National Board Certified teacher raises the achievement levels of students. In this fast-changing world, it is important to have expert teachers teaching in the areas of science and technology.

I would like to obtain my National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Science.

I have taken Component One on my journey and would like to complete Components 2 and 3 this year. My certification will directly impact my students by having a more experienced and reflective teacher. The boards will build my skills and make me a better teacher. The better I am, the better my students will be.

They will benefit from my skill set and my journey as a National Board Certified Teacher. Even if I am not successful, they will learn that failure is the path to success. Many students are unable to persevere so by watching my journey, they will learn real-world applications.
