Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am one of two teachers in an inclusion classroom. We expect to have about 21 students for the upcoming school year. Of those 21 at least half will have some type of classification or special needs; i.e., learning disabled and/or ESL. The remainder of the students are general education students.
My students come from a low income, inner city community.
The community itself is ranked 12th in the state in terms of violent crime, primarily due to the prevalence of gangs. Many of my students do not have academic support at home because their parents are working, do not speak English, or they lack resources at home for help.
My Project
Working in an inclusion class in an inner city school district has many challenges. The biggest challenge is finding a way to motivate students to read in an ever changing digital world. My students have always seemed more noticeably engaged whenever we are talking about current events. That is why I specifically selected Time for Kids magazine, as it is high interest, and has both read aloud and Spanish translation capabilities. I also included other non-fiction book sets to support content areas, and fiction book sets with read aloud capabilities. This should ensure that all readers will find something of interest at their own level.
My goal is to generate curiosity, increase academic achievement and help students become global citizens.
All students deserve an opportunity to build skills using information that they enjoy reading about. They also need to connect the past to the present, and be prepared for the future I need your help to do this. Won't you help mold a future generation? Thank you!
