My students need three sets of listening center books to improve their literacy skills, such as identifying character traits, motivations and theme of a story.
Garrison Keillor said, "A book is a gift you can open again and again." My kids have a variety of reading levels. What better way to encourage my students than by creating a cozy listening center to listen to the audio of a book that will open their minds and imaginations to new things?
At our school, we focus on the individual needs of each and every student from small group instruction, co-operative learning groups and multiple reading programs driven by the students' individual reading level.
We set goals for our students that fit his/her needs which allows them to succeed even if they are above or below grade level.
My Project
During my reading block, students are working on centers that reflect and review skills we are learning in the classroom. In my classroom, we have a listening center. At this center, students listen to a story on CD, while following along in the book, several times during the week. Once the story is over, students complete an activity that is related to the literacy skill using the information they read in the book. As students listen to the audio of each book, they will build his/her fluency, reading stamina, level of comprehension, and develop a deeper understanding and meaning of the text.
Hearing someone else read a story shows the student how to fluently read with good voice and expression.
In third grade, there is a strong emphasis on reading at grade level and being able to comprehend and question a text. When students listen to an to an audio book and are able to follow along, they better understand the text, which leads to a deeper comprehension of the text.
