This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy events, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.
Students develop leadership, organization, and critical thinking skills. In creating this project and selecting a title, the co-presidents researched options within the genre and had the club members vote on a selection. In leading discussions, they will have to apply critical reading skills to identify themes and conflicts to discuss in the club. They also extend these discussions to apply to real-world human behavior and compare it to other texts, challenging each other to develop higher level thinking skills while building their skills to have dynamic and respectful discussions about literature.
In Their Own Words
Our book club is trying to receive funding to start reading our first book of the year. Our goal is to read from various genres, starting with The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco, a mystery book that has received stellar reviews and was recommended to the club. We plan to meet weekly to discuss the book. We are interested in discussing human nature and the actions of the protagonist. This allows us to analyze how different circumstances can influence a person and their decisions. From this, we hope to further our critical thinking skills and open our eyes to different views of the world.
The co-president and I will lead the discussions about the book. We will have a meeting every Wednesday to talk about the themes within the book we’ve encountered so far. The returning members will compare the book to the ones we have previously read. This is a group project so everyone will have a chance to speak. My co-president and I are primarily organizing the meetings and encouraging members to speak their mind.
This project is important because it allows various students from many different circles and backgrounds to come together and discuss a common interest. It will help unify the students while allowing us to delve into the world of a different reality. Members of the club will work on their public speaking skills. Not only will we gain valuable skills, we’ll gain friends too. It can be hard to find others with common interests, especially in a scary place like high school. I want book club to be a place where those who love literature can come together to talk about it and receiving The Girl from the Well is a good place to start.
