This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teachers are planners and as June approaches, I'm thinking about what my next group of fourth graders will need for a successful fourth grade journey.

Wouldn't it be grand if my students had a special place to explore self-awareness, build empathy and reflect on their actions?

A social emotional learning journal can be that special place! The journals I've selected feature reading passages and short writing prompts so students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person. We will write in our journals independently and then come together to discuss our written responses. These important conversations will support students in developing social awareness and relationship skills. In time, students will notice when classmates, friends and family members need something and will meet their need. Students will help others in need by making a card for someone or helping without being asked.

Smiles, kind words and positive energy are contagious. I will know my students are compassion champions by observing students' body language and facial expressions. Also, their social-emotional learning journals will be full of written words from the heart.

Together, we will sprinkle kindness, walk in someone else's shoes and cultivate compassion. The world needs all of us to care!
